Background Note: Covid-19 and World Health Organization

As per the information available at WHO’s website, which states that the organization works to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable. The goal is to ensure that a billion more people have universal health coverage, to protect a billion more people from health emergencies, and further to provide a billion people with better health and well-being.

Certainly with the huge funding received, every year WHO plays a critical role by far-reaching every corner of the earth. It provides medical assistance, prepares for emergencies by identifying, mitigating, and managing risks, prevents emergencies and support the development of tools necessary during outbreaks, and respond to acute health emergencies.

Having said that it is well expected from an international organization like WHO to be more transparent in their functioning and certainly hit the red clause to aware the world with any approaching/expected pandemic. The reliability of such an institution should never be in the control of a single country, like in the case of COVID-19. An organization working for countries at large should not favor or withhold any information, as happened in Wuhan, China. The approach should be human-centric instead of being country centric. This raises a plethora of questions on the functioning of the WHO pertaining to efficacy and transparency.

The United States being one of the largest contributors in terms of finance, the situation became worse when the US decided to completely withdraw from WHO by imposing or restricting the flow of money. The ongoing trade war between the USA and China has turned the world upside down reflecting the failure of foreign policy and diplomatic relationships. This has further placed the World Health Organization in a state of confusion amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, apart from the blame game between these two nations, it is also required to investigate the role of WHO and its failure which costs millions of lives.

It is also important to note that since March 2020, the USA has been accusing China of “secrecy, deception and cover-up” of the outbreak and the World Health Organization of being “China-centric.

Much has been presumed on the subject but, the outbreak of Covid-19 requires an in-depth study to reach some valuable outcome. Therefore, the research is under process to identify the cause of the beginning and why it has led the entire world into a complete disaster. The study will also critically examine the role of WHO before concluding the research.
