Ukraine and Iran: First-round talks on plane downing damages

In a major development, Ukraine began negotiations with an Iranian delegation on compensation for the plane of Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), which was shot down near Tehran earlier this year.

The Boeing-737, en route from Tehran to Kiev, was shot down by two rockets shortly after takeoff from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport on January 8.

All 176 people on board - including 57 Canadians - were killed. Iran said they mistook the passenger plane for a missile at a time of high tensions with the United States.
