Background Note: UN Peacekeeping Force

The United Nations peacekeeping forces are an enduring symbol for maintaining peace and tranquility across the globe. Since the very foundation and basic principles of UN peacekeeping are to help countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace in a strategic and well-organized manner without affecting domestic and international norms.

There are currently 13 peacekeeping operations led by the Department of peace operation starting from Western Sahara, Central African Republic, Mali, D.R. of the Congo, Darfur, Golan, Cyprus, Lebanon, Abyei, Kosovo, South Sudan, India -Pakistan, and the Middle East.

The UN peacekeeping forces are indulged in a variety of roles and responsibilities. In Lebanon, the peacekeeping forces monitor the cessation of hostilities and help ensure humanitarian access to the civilian population. In Cyprus, there is an absence of political settlement, therefore, UN peacekeeping has remained on the island to supervise ceasefire lines, maintain a buffer zone, undertake humanitarian activities and support the good office's mission of the Secretary-General. In Darfur, they provide protection to civilians, also tasked for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and verifying the implementation of agreements, assisting an inclusive political process, and contributing to the promotion of human rights and the rule of law.

Certainly, considering the rise of global conflict, which adds fuel to the political disorder and instability, leads to a civil war. Commenting on the functioning of the UN peacekeeping is neither required nor we intend to do so. However, the gripping environment and rapid violation of the International law raises doubt on the credibility of the United Nations peacekeeping and its persuasive norms.

Considering the contemporary situation it is clearly identifiable that those who are behind the wheel are the ones violating the norms of such institutions. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct an empirical study pertaining to UN peacekeeping considering the current norm and values vis-à-vis protecting international freedom and domestic superiority.
